Xiaomi MI 9 Review

xiaomi mi 9

My Rating 9/10

If you haven’t heard of Xiaomi yet they are a Chinese brand that are selling quality phones and products for a number of years. The xiaomi mi 9 is one of the best mobile phone deals you can get right now in its price bracket. It is a truly flagship phone that none of its competitors can come close to in price. It has a new fast snapdragon 855 processors. The xiaomi mi 9 wireless charging is super fast at 20w  it can be fully charged wireless in 90 minutes which is as faster than any other phone I have seen to date.

It has an excellent camera with 4 times as many pixels as the typical 12MP smartphone. It means that if you zoom in, there is still enough detail to create a good quality photo. With the large 1.6μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel and 1/2” CMOS image sensor, photos are bright and colorful . In fact, Mi 9’s camera will take photos with more details than a 4K television.

It has three essential lenses: wide angle, telephoto, and ultra wide-angle. Mi 9 has a lens with a view wider than typical lenses, and the camera is capable of correcting for distortion. It even supports macro photography, so there’re no limits to your creativity.

Its 20MP high resolution front camera sensor can intelligently combine pixels into a single 1.8μm pixel, making photos brighter in dim light. With the improved AI Beautify and AI portrait modes, each selfie becomes a masterpiece. It also has a built in fingerprint sensor on the front screen and comes with NFC so it can support google pay.

The display is protected by the latest Gorilla Glass 6 by Corning – the most shatter-resistant glass in the smartphone world. Which is already other GG6-featuring phones and hold up very well.  Like The MI 8 before it the xiaomi MI 9 headphone jack is not on this phone either so you will need wireless headphones if you want to listen to your music in private.

Still has only a single speaker but is has very clear sound and good volume. Unfortunately the MI9 does not come with an IP rating so its not waterproof. It has a 3,300mAh battery which isn’t the biggest but still holds up fairly well with 23 hours talk time 12 hours web browsing.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 captures videos up to 4K @ 60fps, and all other common modes are available – 4K@30fps and 1080@30fps. Technically you can zoom in with a pinch gesture.

The digital stabilization does a great job smoothing the camera shake at the expense of minor loss of FoV.

Xiaomi MI 9 SE

My Rating 7/10

The Mi 9 SE is smaller the MI9, at nearly-6-inchs it looks tiny next to the 6.39-inch Mi 9 and 9T. It has a Samsung-made SuperAMOLED like the other two, so the SE isn’t getting treated like a lower-end device in this respect just because it’s the most affordable.

It has got a triple camera too, and the right triple camera – regular/tele/ultra wide, just like other MI 9s. It has the same arrangement you’d find on the Mi 9T, not as good as the high-end Mi 9, but it’s still a respectable camera.

The Mi 9 SE does get the least powerful chip set, but the Snapdragon 712 isn’t bad and packs plenty of punch. And with the smallest screen around, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 9 SE has the lowest battery capacity to

It has triple camera is unlike any other phone in its segment. Like the MI9 it has no headphone jack and no micro SD card slot. Xiaomi’s rarely fit one on phones outside of the Redmi series, so the Mi 9 SE isn’t an exception, but it would have been nice to have if you needed more storage. It nice to have an IR blaster too, which can be used as a TV remote. The speaker is loud with good sound quality.

The OLED panel has enabled Xiaomi to install an under-display fingerprint reader, so that’s another area where the SE is playing with the big boys – you could say that captivate sensors are still the norm in the mid range, but the Mi 9 SE is no ordinary mid range phone.

Xiaomi claims the 9 SE’s display is capable of outputting 650nits of brightness,

With the smallest screen among Mi 9s, the Mi 9 SE also has the smallest battery. Rated at 3,070mAh,but still has 25 hours talk time or 10 hours web browsing.

The video recording is also very good quality up to a stunning 4k and it also has NFC. While its not going to measure up to the MI 9 it is probably one of the best mid range phones in its class. If you want a smaller cheaper Mi 9, the Mi 9 SE is still a great option.

Xiaomi mi 9T

My Rating 8/10

The Mi 9T builds on the Mi 9 flagship size, but now it uses a notch-free edge-to-edge 6.39″ AMOLED panel, probably the same one we saw on the Mi Mix 3. It is protected by a flat piece of Gorilla Glass 5 and has tiny bezels but somewhat noticeable chin

Underneath the screen is an optical fingerprint scanner, but Xiaomi says it has been improved since the Mi 9. It works faster and almost like a conventional one. It lights up when you touch the screen; it scans your finger and unlocks immediately. So, it’s not just talk, Xiaomi did better this time, and the experience is brilliant as far as these sensors allow.

The main feature of the Mi 9T is the notch-less 6.39″ AMOLED screen. Xiaomi has chosen the same 6.39″ size and 2,340 x 1,080 PX resolution (403ppi) for the 9T display as on the Mi 9 but removed the notch. And looking other Xiaomi phones it seems this is probably same panel on the Mi Mix 3 .

The Xiaomi Mi 9T is powered by a 4,000mAh Li-ion battery, about 20% larger than the 3,300 mAh cell inside the Mi 9. The Mi 9T supports Quick Charge and the supplied 18W charger fills 45% of a depleted battery in 30 mins. A full charge takes about 100 mins.

The standby time was better on the Mi 9T when compared to the Mi 9, probably meaning the Snapdragon 730 modem is more power efficient in standby than the S855 chip.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T has a triple-camera on its back with the same logic as the Mi 9. It does have different sensors for all of its three cameras, but should still be able to match the Mi 9 camera quality for the most part.

Just like the Mi 9, the Mi 9T main camera has a huge 1/2″ 48MP sensor behind f/1.75 26mm lens that takes good 12MP images. On top of it, somewhat separated, is the 8MP (1/4″) telephoto snapper behind f/2.4 52mm lens for 2x optical zoom. And below the main camera, sharing the same piece of front glass is the 13MP (1/3″) sensor behind an f/2.4 15mm lens for ultra-wide-angle shots.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T captures video up to 4K @ 30fps, and all other common modes are available – 1080@30fps and 1080p@60fps.

The Mi 9T has an interrupted screen over the Mi 9, a larger battery, and arguably a nicer body. There is also an audio jack and an FM radio – both unavailable on the Mi 9.

The Mi 9T has an inferior chip set, but as far as 1080p performance goes – nobody should be able to tell the difference in performance. And finally, the Mi 9T is cheaper than the Mi 9 – and that’s by a large margin on some markets.

Overall if I could afford it I would go for the MI 9 or if I wanted a smaller cheaper version the MI 9 SE. The Xiaomi MI MIX 3 would also be a good option if you did not need the same quality camera.

Like all of the features of this phone, but has anybody done anything about marginal reception.
I live in an area which is almost a blackspot for phone…absolutely no signal in most of the house and outside only intermittent.
what i am after is a phone with extended coverage for the signal.
do you know if this phone has superior sensitivity or better dsp for improving the range of the phone?
    many thanks for the review

I worked in a blackspot area and as it can take two sim cards I put in a second pay as you go sim card from a different carrier and call could be diverted when one was out of coverage
Some phone carriers might have better coverage than others in certain areas

I have never heard of the Xiaomi MI 9. I’m in the market of getting a new phone. I currently have the Samsung Note 8. I don’t see a price on your post.

I would love to get my hands on one to see how it looks in person. Since I use my phone wherever I go I think the MI 9 is perfect for me. Especially if the camera is that great.

I use the picture I took with my phone on many of my projects so it would be great.
